For Lawrence Upton

by

Scott Thurston

With sentences taken from his appreciation of the work of Maggie OíSullivan

We are enjoined to join

in, become joyful hearing,

if we hear together.

The curtains draw round

as I copy this. Light now

shines into the space,

hitting the edge of a pew.

I canít hear the music,

but the sounds of talk next door,

a crow cawing, the wind

in the trees, come in through

the open window.

Here I am saying that

what we hear takes over us.

Over and around our heads

go the words around us.

We are patterns

responding

to pattern.

And, as I begin to compose
a tweet with this material,
the service ends.
